About the Quintet
The Azalea Wind Quintet are a Manchester-based ensemble passionate about performing new and lesser-known repertoire and celebrating music from cultures from around the world. The group is aptly named after the 'Azalea' flower which is one of the few flowers found to grow in each of the founding members' birth countries, namely the United Kingdom, Australia, Hong Kong and Portugal.
The quintet have performed in venues in Manchester and around the UK and have enjoyed numerous collaborations with composers based in Manchester and Sheffield. Alongside these exciting premieres, the quintet have loved performing works from their birth countries, including music by Ross Edwards, Joly Braga Santos, Malcolm Arnold, and arrangements of Chinese folk music by the quintet’s oboist, Emma Chan.
The Azalea Wind Quintet was founded in 2021 during the members’ postgraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music and were finalists of the RNCM’s Fewkes Prize in 2022 and 2023.
