Beatriz Carvalho
Beatriz is a Portuguese bassoonist currently completing a Postgraduate Diploma: Advanced Studies (PGDip) in Contrabassoon at the RNCM with Simon Davies and Andrea Zucco. Beatriz previously graduated with a Masters with Distinction and PGDip with Distinction in Bassoon at the RNCM with the prestigious tutors Stefano Canuti, Andrea Zucco, Roberto Giaccaglia and Richard Ion.
Before she moved to Manchester, she completed a Bachelor of Orchestral Instrumentalist in Bassoon at ANSO (Lisbon, Portugal) with Roberto Erculiani and Vera Dias. During her studies in Portugal, she worked in many orchestral projects with esteemed conductors such as Jean-Marc Burfin, Jean-Sebastien Béreau, Michael Zilm, Alberto Roque, Pedro Neves, Enrico Onofri.
Beatriz is very keen on exploring different repertoire and new music, so she has performed in varied projects. Some examples are: she has performed Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro with the RNCM Opera; Shostakovich’s 8th Symphony with the RNCM Symphony Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall; she performed Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s Sequences on the Contrabassoon at the Wigmore Hall in London with RNCM New Ensemble; she premiered the piece ‘The Wait’ for solo bassoon, which was a collaboration with the composer Flowers Tannenbaum. She is now collaborating with composers from Platform 4 in order to create new repertoire for Contrabassoon and also programming a piece written for Bassoon and Percussion.
Chamber music is also a major interest in her music life which is why she is a member of several groups such as quintets and duos and she is always looking for opportunities. Beatriz is excited to be part of the Azalea Wind Quintet. The fact that this quintet looks into not so well-known repertoire and appeals her very much as she enjoys discovering new sonorities and facing new challenges.
